Community

Community is so important in life and finding people going through similar issues can be just what you need to make it through. My son and I became part of a new community in August. It is his ASN nursery community. Within this community our kids might go through different things but our journey as parents is very similar and having that community helps a great deal.

Within this new community we have met this amazing boy called Hudson, who has Angelman Syndrome. He's just adorable and we love to see him everyday. I had never heard of Angelman Syndrome before his Mum, Charlene, told me about it.

The NHS describes Angelman Syndrome as: "a rare genetic condition that affects the nervous system and causes severe physical and learning disabilities."

AngelmanUK states characteristic features of Angelman Syndrome include:

▪️delayed development,

▪️severe learning difficulties,

▪️little or no speech

▪️issues with movement and balance

Charlene and her family do loads to raise awareness of Angelman Syndrome. For Halloween this year Charlene and family decorated their house and set up a Just Giving page to collect donations for Angelman Syndrome. Their house looked incredible! They not only raised a fantastic amount of money for Angelman Syndrome, they gave many local children a fantastic halloween experience to remember forever.

I hope all Autistic families have a community they feel they belong to and get support. There are local charities that help and support autistic children. We would be lost without our local charity. Check out the charities and useful websites section for a list of several charities in central Scotland.
